Lucía Laurent - XL - "Sueño de Cacatúa"

Lucía Lauren (LILI) is a Cuban artist with essential self-taught plastic training, graduated in Social Communication from the University of Havana. Her relationship with the image began long before she dedicated herself professionally to painting. Photography constituted her first creative territory: through it she developed a special sensitivity to composition, visual balance, gesture, and the representation of the human figure. Subsequently she spent several years exploring the world of tattooing, a decisive stage for understanding the importance that line, silhouette, simplification of forms, and graphic clarity acquire in her current painting. Ultimately she found in the plastic arts a space of expression that was much wider. Painting allowed her to unite those previous experiences and transform them into an intimate and recognizable universe, built mainly with acrylic on canvas. Lucía Lauren’s work revolves especially around women, nature, flowers, and animals, with a recurring presence of the cat as the silent companion of her protagonists. They are scenes that rarely seek to narrate extraordinary events. On the contrary, the artist seems interested in small moments of calm: a woman holding her cat, a figure surrounded by flowers, a wine glass, an imagined garden, or simply a moment of contemplation. Her painting starts from a pronounced visual synthesis. Lucía eliminates much of the secondary information to keep only what she considers essential. Serene faces, large areas of color, defined contours, and flat shapes construct instantly legible images, yet charged with sensitivity. In her language we find echoes of contemporary illustration and naïve painting, together with decorative references close to Art Deco and Art Nouveau. However, these elements appear reinterpreted from a personal sensitivity—warmer, more everyday, and feminine. One of the most interesting aspects of her work is the use of color. Powder pinks, terracottas, ochres, mustards, and cream tones mingle with deep blacks, bluish greens, intense reds, and very clean whites. In some compositions the palette is delicate and almost domestic; in others, color contrast takes on a clearly graphic intensity. The woman occupies the center of almost her entire pictorial universe. She does not appear as a heroic or distant character, but from a tranquil, elegant, and introspective femininity. They are figures with serene gazes, calm poses, and restrained gestures. There is glamour, but it is intimate and silent glamour. Cats play a particularly interesting role. More than mere decorative elements, they act as symbols of companionship, independence, tenderness, and emotional refuge. In works where woman and animal embrace, the curves of the human body and the cat’s forms almost merge, turning the composition into a representation of affection. Flowers and vegetation fulfill a similar function. They surround the protagonists, appear on their dresses, or integrate into the backgrounds to the point of sometimes erasing the boundary between figure and nature. In this way, woman, nature, and the animal world end up forming one sensitivity. In works such as the figure embracing the cat on a red background, Lucía drastically reduces the palette to build the image through the contrast between black, white, and red. The stripes of the dress cease to be just a pattern and become the main compositional resource: they surround both characters and focus the entire scene on the embrace gesture. The result conveys protection, intimacy, and silence. In other pieces, such as the woman seated beside the cat and the wine glass, the artist develops a composition closer to contemporary design. The terracotta of the dress dialogues with soft pinks, beiges, and blue-green, creating a sophisticated image without feeling cold. The protagonist performs no concrete action; she simply exists within her space. That very absence of dramaturgy constitutes much of the charm of the work. Thus, Lucía Lauren develops a painting that appears simple but is carefully constructed. Her language does not rely on ostentatious technical virtuosity but on the ability to reduce a scene to find its essential emotion. Her universe is feminine, botanical, domestic, and affective. It features everyday beauty, relationships with animals, care, contemplation, and nature as refuge. Her paintings possess a particularly attractive quality: they may seem decorative at first glance, but behind that beauty lies a constant search for harmony, sensitivity, and serenity. In a contemporary landscape where many images seek to grab attention through excess, Lucía Lauren takes the opposite path: she simplifies. And it is precisely in that simplicity that much of the personality of her work resides. Artwork by the artist Lucía Laurent made in acrylic on high-quality professional canvas. The painting depicts a woman in a lyrical pose with closed eyes, resting her delicate face on her hand as she reclines in a red armchair with sinuous floral motifs in pink tones. She wears a loose blue-toned outfit covered by baroque patterns of grayish leaves that harmonize with the olive-green upholstery in the background. In the foreground, a white cockatoo with a yellow beak and defined strokes rests beside her, adding an organic and vital counterpoint to the scene. The balance of the palette between warm and cool tones, combined with the fluidity of the stroke, grants the canvas an elegant serenity and a markedly decorative timelessness.
