Louis Mainard et Paul Meyan - Plus haut ! Plus grand !!...

Very handsome copy in the original edition (1892) of the title "Higher! Bigger!! Chicago." Published by Lecène, Oudin et Cie, the work stands out for its splendid period binding richly ornamented, an essential witness to late 19th-century industrial bookbinding. This documentary and popular-science work is part of the era’s fascination with the great technological, maritime, and industrial challenges of Gilded Age America, culminating around the great ships and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The work is magnificently illustrated by Georges Roux, one of the leading illustrators of Jules Verne novels at Hetzel. It contains numerous engravings both in-text and as plates of exceptional finesse. ** Condition report : - Front covers: Very beautiful front board, with polychrome colors and fresh, luminous gold inlays (ship motifs, sailors, and title in relief). The back board is in good condition. - Spine: The spine remains visually appealing with its gold lettering and illustrated figure, but shows signs of wear: rubbing on the cloth, slight wear at the hinges, and a small nick/perforation on the left joint (see photos). - Edges: Magnificent gilding on all three edges, well-bright. - Interior: Interior fresh and clean, hinges and cords solid, paper well preserved without major foxing. A very attractive copy, ideal for a collector of 19th-century decorative bindings, travel narratives, or books illustrated by Georges Roux.
