The work was first published in Latin in 1717, in Altdorf. Sénac translated the text into French in 1724. Heister (1683-1758) studied medicine at Giessen, then served as Ruysch's assistant in Amsterdam. After ten years at the University of Altdorf, he held several chairs at the University of Helmstadt (anatomy, surgery, botany, pathology). He is regarded as the founder of scientific surgery in Germany. He is credited with the invention of a trunk orthosis, the first post-mortem appendectomy operation, and the introduction of the term "tracheotomy".
