Lorenz Heister (Latin: Laurentius Heister) (Frankfurt am Main, September 19, 1683 – Bornum am Elm, April 18, 1758) was a German anatomist, surgeon and botanist. From 1702 to 1706 Heister studied at the University of Giessen and Wetzlar, after which he moved to Amsterdam, where he studied anatomy with Frederik Ruysch (1638–1731). In the summer of 1707 he was an assistant-physician in field hospitals in Brussels and Ghent during the War of the Spanish Succession. He then traveled to Leiden, where he studied anatomy with Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (1653–1721) and Govert Bidloo (1649–1713), and also attended Herman Boerhaave’s lectures on chemistry and eye diseases. In 1708 he earned his doctorate at the University of Harderwijk, and in the summer of 1709 he rejoined the Dutch army as a field surgeon during the siege of Tournai. Shortly thereafter he distinguished himself in the treatment of the wounded from the Battle of Malplaquet. In 1711 he was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Altdorf, and from 1720 he was professor of anatomy and surgery in Helmstedt, where he spent the rest of his life. During his tenure at Helmstedt he also gave lectures in botany and practical medicine. In 1730 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. His best-known work is Chirurgie, a book on surgery that was translated into many languages. It was widely used in Japan, and remained a standard text in Vienna until 1838. Heister’s botanical garden in Helmstedt was considered one of the finest in Germany. In 1718 he coined the word "tracheostomy". He is also credited as the first physician to perform a postmortem examination of appendicitis. The plant genus Heisteria is named after him, as are the Heister spiral valves, defined as anatomical folds of the cystic duct. He died in Bornum am Elm. His botanical writings were published in 1755 as Beschreibung eines neuen Geschlechts, with illustrated descriptions of plants.
