全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / LIME SPATULA - Lot 11

LIME SPATULA Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region, Milne Bay Province Wood with lime highlights H. 24.5 cm – W. 6 cm Provenance: - Harry Beran Collection This enigmatic object appears to be a lime spatula, both in form and size. The heavily worn tip may be the remnant of the blade of a spatula whose material was “eaten away” by lime, rendering it too short to be used. Subsequently, the object may have been set aside or repurposed for another use. The handle is superbly carved with a double spiral that strongly resembles a stylized canoe. This archaic double-spiral form is found as a petroglyph at certain sites in the Massim region (see Meyer, A.: Oceanic Art / Ozeanische Kunst / Art Océanien. Kônemann Verlage, 1995, fig. 3, p. 11).
