THE ART OF GOVERNING SAILS: 126 ENGRAVINGS IN A MONUMENTAL MANUAL OF SAILING FOR THE GREAT NAVIGATION OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY A monumental manual of seamanship that gathers the technical knowledge of sailing navigation in the nineteenth century. Published in Madrid in 1859, it presents the famous Darcy Lever work in the Spanish version expanded by naval officer Baltasar Vallarino. Two volumes, one entirely dedicated to the atlas, with 126 engraved plates and hundreds of technical figures. A work of particular interest for the history of navigation, shipbuilding, and the European navy. Spanish edition, corrected and expanded, of the celebrated nautical treatise by Darcy Lever, published by Imprenta Nacional of Madrid in 1859. The work, translated and adapted by captain of the line Baltasar Vallarino, systematically documents the techniques of rigging, equipment, and maneuvering of the great sailing ships. The atlas comprises 126 engraved plates, with hundreds of illustrations dedicated to rigging, sails, lines, knots, blocks, and deck operations. Vallarino’s additions illustrate the differences between British practices and those of the Spanish navy. Two volumes in contemporary bindings in full brown leather, with superficial wear and partially worn gilded decorations. WHY TO BUY Spanish edition of 1859, considerably expanded compared with the first 1842 edition. A large, complete atlas of all 126 engraved plates with hundreds of nautical illustrations. An important Spanish adaptation of one of the most influential British sailing manuals. Two volumes with uniform contemporary bindings, of particular interest to collectors of naval history and maritime technique. MARKET VALUE Indicative commercial value between 800 and 1,000 euros for a complete set of the two volumes, with all 126 plates and in good overall condition. Exemplars particularly well preserved may command higher valuations among collectors specializing in seamanship and naval history. The completeness of the atlas is the main factor in its value. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION Madrid, Imprenta Nacional, 1859. Two volumes in octavo format, respectively 21.5 × 15 cm and 23.5 × 20.2 cm. Volume I: V, 290 pages. Madrid, Imprenta Nacional, 1859. Lever, Darcy; Vallarino, Baltasar. THE STORY During the early nineteenth century, ocean navigation still relied greatly on the skill of crews in governing complex systems of sails, masts, lines, and maneuvers. The great military and mercantile ships required precise knowledge of the equipment and rigorous coordination of on-board operations. Darcy Lever’s treatise was born to make this wealth of competence accessible through technical descriptions accompanied by detailed illustrations. Its diffusion contributed to the standardization of nautical instruction. The Spanish translation by Baltasar Vallarino answered the need to adapt British procedures to the traditions and operational requirements of the Iberian fleet. The plates devoted to masts, maneuvers, and even emergency situations provide an extraordinarily tangible picture of how great sailing ships operated before the definitive rise of mechanical propulsion. THE AUTHOR Darcy Lever was a British author specialized in sailing navigation techniques, remembered above all for The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor, published at the beginning of the nineteenth century. His manual became a reference for studying equipment and naval maneuvers, thanks especially to the integration of written explanations and graphic representations. Baltasar Vallarino, a Spanish Navy officer, oversaw the translation and adaptation of the work, enriching it with observations related to the customs and operational needs of the Spanish fleet. His collaboration transformed the British manual into a training instrument specifically destined for the Iberian maritime world. THE PRINTING This edition was printed in Madrid in 1859 by Imprenta Nacional, the official printing house of the Spanish state. The title page bears the indication Segunda edición and specifies the addition of twelve plates containing sixty-two figures compared to the previous illustrative apparatus. The atlas separately collects a total of 126 engraved plates, devoted to the analytical representation of equipment and nautical operations. The precision of the engraving allows one to distinguish constructive details and configurations of maneuvers that would be difficult to understand through text alone. Plate 95, shown in the photographs, depicts several situations of a ship in difficulty, documenting the practical character of the technical illustration. The 1859 edition constitutes a significant testimony to the persistence and evolution of traditional nautical culture in the transitional era between sail and steam. RARITY A specialized work of notable bibliographic interest, especially when preserved in the two original volumes with the complete atlas. Nineteenth-century nautical manuals were often subjected to intensive practical use, resulting in wear of bindings, loss of plates, or separation of atlases from their corresponding texts. The presence of the 126 plates represents therefore an essential element for collectors. The second Spanish edition of 1859 also has autonomous interest apart from the British original, thanks to the expansions and technical adaptations by Vallarino. Its relative commercial rarity requires, however, verification of the availability of other complete copies on the market. BIBLIOGRAPHY Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español (CCPB), no. 000638535-4. Darcy Lever, The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor, first edition, 1808. Baltasar Vallarino, Arte de aparejar y maniobras de los buques, primera edición española, Madrid, 1842; segunda edición, Madrid, Imprenta Nacional, 1859. PERCHÉ ABBIAMO SCELTO QUEST'OPERA We chose this treatise for the extraordinary richness of its iconographic apparatus and for its ability to document one of the great technical heritages of the age of sail. The 126 plates transform a navigation manual into a true visual encyclopedia of nineteenth-century seamanship. The combination of Lever’s text and Vallarino’s expansions gives the work an interest that goes beyond mere manual instruction, allowing comparison of two great European naval traditions. The original bindings, the richness of the engravings, and the joint preservation of text and atlas make this copy particularly representative of the material and scientific history of navigation.
