全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / Lengthy Curved Woolly Mammoth Tusk Section on Custom Stand
North America, United States, Alaska, Pleistocene Epoch. A long, sweeping section of fossilized mammoth tusk, preserving the outer sheath of dentine in an arc that traces a meter along its curve (equivalent to 41 inches). The surface is weathered to mottled brown, with longitudinal cracking and lamellar separation typical of ivory buried in sediment. It has been professionally stabilized and mounted on a wood base. Mammoth tusks are enormously elongated upper incisors that grew throughout life in conical layers, spiraling outward and inward in the distinctive sweep seen here. Bulls could carry tusks exceeding 4.5 meters (fifteen feet); even this partial tusk conveys the sheer scale of the whole! Item # 205065
