LEGRAS (1839-1916) - Vase - Large Belfort Vase with...

LEGRAS / MONTJOYE — (1839-1916) Large Belfort Vase with Enameled Dahlias, Golden Lily of the Valley & Sumptuous Frieze of Chestnut Leaves and Bindweed — Circa 1900 Splendid large LEGRAS vase in blown glass, model “Belfort,” with an opacified deep violet ground, wine-tinted throughout, almost velvety under light, bearing a wonderful entirely hot-enameled floral decoration. A majestic dahlia opens wide its corolla in a subtle range of white nacre, pink, and mauve. Its golden yellow center, delicately shaded with brown, seems to catch the light, while a second flower, younger and still half-open, rises beside it. Their long tender-green stems traverse the vase with suppleness, accompanied by broad leaves whose nuances are delicately blended. But perhaps it is in its extraordinary gold decoration that this glassware reveals its priceless aspect. Around the flowers, delicate sprigs of lily of the valley are scattered, drawn in gold, like a shower of tiny luminous bells. Then, as we move up toward the neck, the decoration becomes even more sumptuous: a spectacular frieze of chestnut leaves and bindweed unfolds all around the vase, drawing on the violet glass a real golden vegetal lace. A few small beads of white enamel punctuate this frieze and catch the light, while the gold continues into the finely worked foliage of the lower part. As you turn the vase, flowers, foliage, and scrolls appear and disappear, giving the decoration surprising depth. The dahlias seem to spring from the violet gloom while the lily of the valley and the golden foliage run along the glass as if illuminated by the last rays of the sun. The elegance of its tall silhouette with a widened base and square collar, the almost mysterious depth of its violet glass, and the precious luster of its enamels compose a true nocturnal garden painted on glass, where the flowers come to life amid a profusion of gold. A superb Art Nouveau creation by the Legras house, remarkable for the richness and finesse of its decoration, in which the master glassmaker transforms a simple floral evocation into a composition that is poetic, luminous, and precious. Magnificent piece described as form “Belfort” with this beautiful dahlia decoration perfectly listed and authenticated in the famous Legras Master Glassmaker’s Catalog Raisonné of Saint-Denis under reference no. 0725 (ref. 3352 – LV 27) Beautiful height of 28 cm with a very generous volume. The success of this superb LEGRAS model was recently highlighted at a major auction in Paris, which generated remarkable enthusiasm among collectors: an identical copy of this “Belfort” vase, presented alongside a second smaller Muller glass piece, saw the lot soar to 1,400 €! A very fine adjudication that testifies to the interest and appeal elicited by this superb model from the Legras house. See the latest photos. Excellent condition for its great age (more than 125 years!) with only a few very light signs of use consistent with the age of this work well over a century old! A very beautiful glass piece for collectors, in which François-Théodore Legras seems to have imprisoned in the glass the light and the fragile beauty of a magnificent blossoming dahlia stem. Sublime collector’s item from this famous master glassmaker of the early 20th century who will surely embellish your interior and evoke the admiration of your guests! Under the base there is a pretty trace of the pontil of the blowing rod, cut with pliers, a moving testimony to the old manufacturing techniques and the remarkable artisanal know-how of the Saint-Denis glassmakers. Very beautiful Art Nouveau collectible piece from the Nancy School period. Daum Nancy, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique...
