Lorenz Heister (1683–1758) is considered among the founders of modern scientific surgery in Germany. The author was the first to perform a post-mortem appendectomy and introduced the term "tracheotomy". Portrait of the author in the frontispiece. Beautiful inhabited vignette engraved on the title page. Initial capitals, headpieces and tailpieces. 8 copper plates with multiple folds (numbered up to IX, V MISSING). Light foxing, some pages slightly browned. Nevertheless, a copy in overall excellent condition.
