Late Roman/Early Byzantine Bronze Necklace with a coin of...

Collar with Byzantine coin of Justin II and Sophia — 569–577 A.D. — 6th Century Elegant and unique necklace that incorporates an original bronze coin from the Byzantine Empire, minted during the reign of Emperor Justin II (565–578 A.D.) and his wife, Empress Sophia, at the historic mint of Antioch, then known as Theoupolis. The coin, belonging to the 40 nummi or follis issue, constitutes a magnificent testimony to the history of the Eastern Roman Empire. On its obverse are depicted Justin II and Empress Sophia enthroned, bearing symbols of imperial and Christian authority. This joint portrayal of both sovereigns is one of the most interesting features of 6th-century Byzantine numismatics. The reverse presents the great letter M, indicative of its value of 40 nummi, accompanied by Christian symbols and the mint mark of Theoupolis (Antioch). The coin preserves an attractive ancient patina, with green, dark, and coppery tones that enhance its high reliefs and its extraordinary historical character. Mounted with a metal ring onto an elegant black cord, it becomes an exclusive historical jewel that combines more than 1,450 years of age with a contemporary design.
