Late Roman/Byzantine Folding Key. Ca. 5th-11th century AD. Bronze, 35 mm, 4.5 g. A small bronze folding key featuring a circular hoop and an articulated shank terminating in a right-angled, notched bit. The key is attached between projecting hinge lugs, allowing the shank to fold towards the hoop for compact carrying. The surface displays a muted green-grey patina. Combining practical security with an ingenious portable design, folding keys offer an intimate glimpse into everyday life in the Byzantine world. The ring-shaped handle allowed the key to be carried conveniently, Provenance: Bought in 2026 at a Dutch auction house; previously in a private collection. Purchase invoice on file.
