Large fossil skull fragment of a steppe bison (Bison priscus) – Pleistocene (Ice Age) For sale is an impressive and massive fossil skull fragment (cranium with both horn cores) of an Ice Age steppe bison (Bison priscus), also known as the steppe wisent. These mighty wild bovids were the dominant large mammals of the Ice Age mammoth steppe. This spectacular collectible piece captivates with its monumental presence and the typical, broad and upward-curving horn orientation. • Excellent bone structure: The back (occiput) perfectly displays the fascinating, honeycomb-like pneumatisation (air chambers in the bone) that drastically reduced the weight of the massive head in life, without diminishing stability for territorial fights. • Natural details: On the horn cores the deep, characteristic longitudinal grooves of the blood vessels are visible, which once supplied nutrients to the (now gone) outer horn sheath made of keratin. The underside shows the large foramen magnum and the two well-preserved occipital condyles. • Preservation: The fossil is heavy, highly mineralized and features a beautiful, authentic coloration from thousands of years of storage in Ice Age river sediments. Specifications: • Species: Steppe bison / steppe wisent (Bison priscus) • Age: Late Pleistocene (Weichselian Ice Age, ca. 30,000 – 50,000 years old) • Provenance: Europe (Rhine Graben area / gravel pit find) The fossil is in an honest, authentic find state. It has only been roughly cleaned to remove loose dirt. The original, thousands-year-old patina and mineral adherences from the Ice Age sediment layers have deliberately been preserved. The bone is heavy, stable and highly mineralized. No artificial reconstructions, additions or chemical deep treatments have been performed – a pure, unadulterated natural fossil, as found. The horn tips show primordial, naturally given wear. An absolute highlight for any discerning fossil collection, as an exclusive decorative object for upscale interiors or as a display piece for exhibitions
