The multiple facets catch the light and reveal the richness of this royal blue, while discreet white calcite veins nuance the whole. Lapis-lazuli, stone of wisdom and inner truth, is traditionally associated with clarity of mind and self-expression. Lapis-lazuli, mined for over six thousand years from the Badakhshan mines in Afghanistan, was so precious in Antiquity that it was ground to produce ultramarine pigment, a pigment reserved for royal frescoes and the most sacred illuminations. 1.
