In the period before World War I the high performance luxury vehicles developed by the Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt were sought-after status symbols. During the war the company produced flight engines for the Allies. World War II led to Hispano Suiza completely changing over its production to arms. In 1938 the last luxury vehicle left the works. Later the company was part of the Swiss Oerlikon-Bührle combine.
