Hitda Codex - Codex Hs1640 Darmstadt, University and State Library Copy number: XLVII 219 leaves Gold leaf application Binding crafted by hand Hand stitching Mounted on antique parchment Leather cover with the four Evangelists on gold leaf applied by hand and brass frames The Hitda Codex is a magnificent Latin Evangelary created for the female monastery of Meschede and donated by Abbess Hitda, a representative of the German nobility. This precious manuscript stands out for its artistic excellence and decorative richness, with 65 pages finely illustrated, including 24 full-page miniatures enriched with gold leaf and elaborate frames. The images reflect a refined symbolic language, the result of an art that blends Byzantine and Carolingian iconography with an expressive and experimental taste typical of the period. The decorative apparatus supports the mysteries of liturgical life, creating a visual dialogue of great intensity. Among the most notable miniatures, the famous scene of the “Storm on the Sea of Tiberias” stands out, evidence of the originality and mastership of the work. This codex represents a rare example of the cultural and spiritual wealth of the Ottonian Renaissance, an era of extraordinary innovations in the art of illumination.
