Jules Verne - Les grands navigateurs du XVIIIe - 1879

[JULES VERNE – VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES – NINETEENTH CENTURY] VERNE, Jules General History of great voyages and great travelers. The Great Navigators of the eighteenth century Paris, Library of Education and Recreation, J. Hetzel & Co., 18 Rue Jacob Original edition of this monumental fresco devoted to maritime explorations of the Enlightenment century, illustrated with drawings by P. Philippoteaux and facsimiles after ancient documents and maps by Matthis and Morieu. In-8 (1 volume). Half-title, title page engraved and illustrated with a marine vignette by Hildibrand, text, illustrations outside the text and maps. Complete with the illustrations and facsimiles required. Full red morocco binding of the publisher's Sobrent type, spine with false nerves adorned with gilded compartments and the title, boards framed by wide cold (blind) gilt fillets with geometric motifs, gilt edges. Superb romantic binding typical of Hetzel's house productions. Published by the Library of Education and Recreation of J. Hetzel et Cie at 18 Rue Jacob in Paris. This is the second volume of the great historical and geographical trilogy led by Jules Verne on the history of great voyages. Beautiful overall condition of the red binding, with well-preserved boards and a spine with legible gilding, presenting a fine freshness for a binding of that era. Body of the work well preserved, with scattered foxing (frequent on this type of paper and edition of the Hetzel collection). With this series, Jules Verne does not merely imagine worlds: he undertakes to recount the true epic of terrestrial and maritime exploration. In this volume devoted to the Great Navigators of the eighteenth century, he highlights the leading figures of nautical science (Bougainville, Cook, La Pérouse), combining the historian’s rigor with the storyteller’s talent that made him world-renowned.
