Face au Drapeau - Clovis Dardentor [very rare Globe Type 2 inlay] Jules Verne Hetzel - 1897, Cat. Y 447 pages 28 x 20cm 2kg Superb and very rare copy in the original edition and second binding. Illustrations by L. Benett. Paris, Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation, J. Hetzel Éditeur, sd (1897). Large 8vo, double. Publisher's binding in full polychrome percaline “with the golden globe” of the 2nd type (with inlay). Engel Relieur. Gilded edges. Anthracite endpapers. Imprimerie Gauthier-Villars. Twelve color plates hors-texte. Catalogue “O” for 1896-1897. First illustrated editions and second double binding. The first binding with the “golden globe” from 1896 for Face au drapeau/Clovis Dardentor, known as “with the black band” and with lunar crests, being so fragile and different from later versions, collectors readily turn to the “golden globes” from the 2nd to the 4th type. The only difficulty is that these versions are all, for this title, truly very rare. Boisgirard sale reference: - 24 Jan. 2018, lot 46 - 26 Oct. 2021: Jacob, second sale, lot 136 Superb first cover bright with radiant gilding, good second cover. Corners well squared. Back in very good condition. Small touch-up at the lower spine. Fine gilded gutter. Original endpapers intact. Interior of great freshness, pages white with almost no foxing. Very beautiful copy of great rarity.
