[Please note that the background setting in some images was created using AI to present the books in a pleasant environment. These background elements do not alter or affect the true representation and condition of the books] MANUAL OF EQUESTRIANISM AND THE ART OF DARING THE BIT: THE CELEBRATED TREATISE OF JUAN SEGUNDO Important nineteenth-century Spanish manual dedicated to the art of riding and, in particular, to the proper bit-ing of the horse. The work systematically explains the anatomy of the mouth, the position of the head, the different types of bits and the ways in which they are used relative to the animal’s characteristics. The text also includes riding exercises, instructions to improve the rider’s position and numerous practical observations gained by the author from decades of experience. This copy belongs to the THIRD CORRECTED AND AUGMENTED EDITION, published in Madrid in 1858. Particularly interesting is the iconographic apparatus, with plates dedicated to the different types of bits, bits, bridles and devices for riding. REASONS FOR COLLECTING / WHY TO BUY IMPORTANT TREATISE ON HORSEMANSHIP - Testament to Spanish Equestrian culture of the 19th century and the progressive technical systematization of riding. RICH ICONOGRAPHIC APPARATUS - The volume includes plates, some fold-outs, depicting bits, bits, bridles, exercises and devices for the rider. BRUGALLA BINDING - A specimen with refined twentieth-century binding signed by the famous Brugalla binder, dated 1948, a particular point of interest for collectors of riding books and artistic bindings. MARKET VALUE For this copy, the refined Brugalla binding, the completeness of the illustrative apparatus and the overall good state of preservation are relevant factors, placing the valuation between 500 and 600 euros. CONDITION Twentieth-century binding executed by the Brugalla binder, in half leather with boards covered in decorated multicolored marbled paper; five-railed spine with title and rich gold tooling; flyleaves in decorated paper and top edge gilt. The binding is solid and decorative, with minor, normal signs of aging. The copy is illustrated with numerous engraved plates, including large fold-out plates depicting bit-types and harnesses, as well as figures related to the rider’s position and exercises. The pages generally show good preservation, with slight yellowing and scattered stains, more evident on some plates. There are signs of use and light marginal imperfections, consistent with the volume’s age. In old books with a long history, some imperfections may be present, not always noted in the description. Pp. (8); 110; (8). FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Nuevo método para embocar bien todos los caballos y tratado sucinto de equitación. Madrid, Imprenta á cargo de Miguel González, 1858. Juan Segundo. CONTEXT The work belongs to technical literature dedicated to riding and the horse culture in 19th-century Spain. The core of the treatise concerns the bit: Segundo begins from the observation of the horse’s mouth, to establish different types of bit and head position. The method stresses the necessity of adapting the bit to the individual characteristics of the animal, avoiding the indiscriminate use of the same type of bit. The plates are thus an integral part of the work, as they allow a visual comparison of the different forms of bit and their effects. The volume also addresses the rider’s position, exercises to obtain steadiness, the use of hands and legs, and various aspects of training. Of particular interest is the attention given to the technical instruments of riding, documented by the large final plates. The work thus sits at the intersection of a practical manual, a technical treatise and an iconographic repertory of riding equipment. The editorial fortune of the text is significant: the first edition appeared in Madrid in 1855; a second edition followed in 1857 and then this corrected and augmented third edition of 1858. The Gaceta de Madrid explicitly documents the succession of editions. BIOGRAPHY JUAN SEGUNDO is a Spanish author linked to the 19th-century equestrian culture, presented on the title page as “intendente” and as author of studies and projects dedicated to the improvement of the art of horsemanship and cattle production. His bibliographic activity is documented at least from 1847. In the bit treatise he also presents himself as a founding member of the Sociedad Hípica Española and of the Instituto de los Amigos de los Caballos, as well as author of a safety-saddle project intended for women riders. His approach is essentially practical and experimental: the author states that he bases his method on long direct experience with horses and on systematic observation of the effects produced by the different bit systems. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION A second corrected edition appeared in Madrid in 1857 at Miguel González. Bibliographic sources describe the edition as a volume of about 110 pages accompanied by illustrative material related to bits, bits and riding. The Gaceta de Madrid explicitly records the publication of the third edition of 109 pages in 1858, confirming the editorial continuity of the work. The work had a sufficiently wide circulation to be used and noted in circles concerned with breeding, cavalry and riding. Already in 1855 an official order of the Spanish Government recommended the purchase of Juan Segundo’s work due to its relevance for the conservation and teaching related to horses. The presence of multiple editions within a few years, together with the documented institutional diffusion, testifies to contemporaneous interest in Segundo’s method.
