José Sabogal (1888–1956) was a leading Peruvian painter and a central figure in the development of Indigenismo, an artistic movement that sought to celebrate Peru’s Indigenous cultures and identity. Born in Cajabamba, Sabogal travelled extensively in South America and Europe before returning to Peru, where he became an influential teacher and later director of the National School of Fine Arts in Lima. His paintings are characterised by strong, simplified forms and earthy colours, often depicting Indigenous people and rural life. His work played an important role in establishing Indigenous subjects at the heart of modern Peruvian art.
