John Steuart Curry (American, 1897-1946), John Brown

Lithograph, 1939, pencil signed, titled, and dedicated to the consignor from the artist lower margin, edition of 250, published by Associated American Artists (AAA) and with their label to verso, presented in original frame. Image size 14 3/4 x 10 3/4 in.; Frame dimensions 20 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. From the Estate of Samuel and Margaret Nock, Manhattan, Kansas This dramatic lithograph depicts the radical abolitionist John Brown as a towering, messianic figure during the violent “Bleeding Kansas” conflict of the 1850s. With arms outstretched in a prophetic, cross-like pose, Brown grips a rifle and a Bible, symbolizing his fierce, faith-driven crusade against the institution of slavery. In the background, swirling tornadoes and westward-bound covered wagons evoke the turbulent American frontier, the approaching storm of the Civil War, and represent Brown's reputation as the "Cyclone of Kansas." Very good condition; some light margin toning and age to matting; not examined out of frame.
