Joel Leonard Perlman (American, b. 1943), Untitled

Fabricated and welded steel, unsigned. 27 x 24 1/2 x 16 in. Sculptor Joel Perlman studied at Cornell (BFA 1965) under artist Jack Squier (1927-2015), and the University of California, Berkeley (MA 1967), and the Central School of Art and Design, London. Perlman is best known for his sculptures that juxtapose flat geometries of welded steel, aluminum, and bronze in three-dimensional space. Working intuitively, his sculptures sketch themselves out in airy volumes, both glorifying and defying the weight and density of the materials. Since his first one-man show at the André Emmerich Gallery in 1973, Perlman has had over 40 solo exhibitions, and his work is in scores of public collections. His sculpture has been the subject of numerous art publications and cited in hundreds of others. He is the recipient of important awards and grants such as the Pollock-Krasner Grant (2012) and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1974). Recent solo exhibitions of his work include the following venues: 2025 Bridgehampton Museum Bridgehampton, NY; 2022 Mark Borghi Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY; 2020 Lee Weber Gallery, Greenwich, CT; 2019 Loretta Howard Gallery, New York, NY. His work in in various museums and collections including Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; among many others.
