JAN VAN EYCK (Maaseik, c. 1390 - Bruges, 1441) Follower - Portrait

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 48 × 33 cm. Dimensions with frame: 62 × 47 cm. Bust portrait of a man, depicted in three-quarter view against a dark, uniform background, following the characteristic models of Early Flemish painting and, particularly, the portrait tradition developed by Jan van Eyck during the first half of the 15th century. The mature figure is dressed in a dark garment with a high collar and a voluminous reddish headdress, formed by ample folds of fabric that unfold around his head and constitute the main chromatic element of the composition. His face, with its individualized features, prominent nose, thin lips, and penetrating gaze, is directed towards the viewer, establishing a direct relationship that lends the representation a remarkable psychological intensity. The soft, directed lighting falls on the forehead, cheekbones, and nose, modeling the facial features through delicate transitions of light and shadow, while the garments gradually blend into the background, focusing all attention on the sitter’s expression. The composition directly recalls the celebrated male portraits of Jan van Eyck, especially the well-known Portrait of a Man with a Red Turban, housed in the National Gallery in London and dated 1433, a paradigmatic work of Flemish portraiture due to its extraordinary naturalism, descriptive precision, and ability to convey the individuality of the sitter. Although this painting presents compositional and stylistic differences from the original, it shares with the Eyckian tradition an interest in the meticulous representation of physiognomic features, the sculptural treatment of the face, and the use of a neutral background that accentuates the presence of the subject. Furthermore, similarities can be noted with the portraiture of Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1399–1464) and Hans Memling (c. 1430–1494), especially in its compositional restraint, psychological characterization, and the emphasis placed on the gaze. The painted surface exhibits visible craquelure, particularly noticeable in the face, headdress, and dark areas, a circumstance that will need to be assessed through direct examination to determine its state of conservation. The work is an interesting example of the enduring influence of 15th-century Flemish portraiture models on later European painting, reflecting the impact of Jan van Eyck on successive generations of artists and copyists. The attribution to a follower of Jan van Eyck is based on its stylistic and compositional characteristics, although a definitive authorship cannot be established from the available documentation. Lot in international storage (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will be applied and are the responsibility of the buyer.
