J. P. Oud: Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud is one of the defining architects of European modernism and was closely associated with the avant-garde movement De Stijl. In his designs he fused functional architecture with a clear geometric language and the use of pure colors. Projects like the famous Café De Unie in Rotterdam from 1925 show his attempt to translate principles of neoplastic painting into architectural facade design. As city architect of Rotterdam, Oud also realized numerous socially oriented housing projects and significantly influenced the development of international modernism.
