J.C. Klinkosch (JCK) - Cutlery set (36) - .800 silver - Vienna, ca. 1870-1890

Important Viennese 36-piece cutlery service in 800/1000 silver, by J.C. Klinkosch, datable to the last quarter of the 19th century, roughly 1870–1890. The service is complete for 12 people and consists of: 12 tablespoons of 17 cm, 12 forks of 17 cm and 12 knives of 21 cm. The flatware features a rich historicist / neorococo decoration in a rocaille taste, with volutes, foliate motifs and finely raised floral patterns. The handles are particularly elegant, with a wide central smooth field framed by vegetal ornaments, reproduced also on the fittings and on the back of the spoons. The cutlery bears the distinctive Austro-Hungarian mark with Diana’s head. There is also the maker’s mark inside a rectangular cartouche, in the form and proportions corresponding to the well-known JCK mark of J.C. Klinkosch, Vienna. The imprint is somewhat worn from age, and the individual letters are not all perfectly legible today, but the size and structure of the punch are consistent with the documented mark of the manufacturer. The knife handles also bear the “800” mark. The blades are stainless steel and bear the corresponding inscription. Total weight of tablespoons and forks: about 1,200 g. Gross weight of the 12 knives: about 900 g. Gross total weight of all 36 pieces: about 2,100 g. The service is accompanied by a suggestive vintage multi-level case, with red interior, bearing in gold the inscription: “Ditta Giovanni Cavalleri – Orefice Gioielliere – Milano – S.ta Margherita 11”. Giovanni Cavalleri belongs to the historic Milanese goldsmithing tradition, with documented activity dating back to the 19th century. The presence of the branded case thus adds further historical and collectible interest to the set. The flatware is in good condition compatible with age, with normal signs of use, light abrasions and patina. The decoration remains well defined. The case shows wear and deterioration of the inner lining, clearly visible in the photographs. A refined 19th-century Viennese silverware service, complete for 12 people, with strong decorative presence and accompanied by its historic Milanese case. The photographs are an integral part of the description and document details, hallmarks and conditions.
