The work features a white plaster or marble bust of the writer and philosopher Voltaire (after the famous model sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon), placed beside three antique leather-bound books with careful gold tooling. The contrast between the dark background, treated with a generous texture, and the luminous whiteness of the trompe-l'œil bust adds great depth to this academic composition.
