Italy - Rome / Roman Forum / Emperor Augustus; Giacomo...

• In the center is depicted the milestone column topped by a sphere. • The nineteen figures: Around the column are arranged 19 men wearing traditional clothes, representing the different peoples and the various continents then known under Roman dominion or in contact with Roman influence. Clear Latin labels can be read such as Germanus (the German), Persa (the Persian), Arabs (the Arab), Gallus (the Gaul), Hispanus (the Spaniard), up to exotic representations for the era such as the Brasilianus (the Brazilian) or the Peruanus (the Peruvian). • Numeration: In the upper right there is the plate number 20, corresponding to the album sequence. • Text: At the bottom left there is a dense descriptive explanation in Latin that historically contextualizes the monument. Erected by Emperor Augustus in 20 BC in his role as curator viarum (superintendent of roads), it represented the true "Kilometer Zero" of the Roman Empire. From this central hub they theoretically calculated the distances of the entire gigantic road network that connected Rome to its most distant provinces. It is from here that the famous popular saying originated: "all roads lead to Rome". Good condition The ink has maintained excellent density and the contrast of the copper engraving.
