Italy - Ferrara; Pietro Bertelli e Francesco Scoto...

Map of Ferrara is a copperplate aquatint engraving made by Francesco Scoto in 1659. This map is part of the work Itinerario d’Italia, published in Padua for Matteo Cadorino. Dimensions of the sheet: cm. 16×20 approximately Dimensions of the engraving: cm. 12×17 approximately Support: Light wrinkled paper Condition: Excellent state of conservation Fold: Editorial In the upper part the name of the city is shown divided into cartouches, flanked by the papal coat of arms with the keys of Saint Peter, symbolizing the period of the Papal States’ domination over the city (begun after the devolution of 1598). At the center of the composition the mass of the Castello Estense clearly stands out, surrounded by its water moat. The city is entirely enclosed by its imposing bastioned walls, designed according to the criteria of modern fortification to resist the first firearms. In the lower part the branch of the Po River (the Po di Volano) runs, animated by period boats. Engravings of this type were inserted in the famous volumes of itineraries and European geographic atlases printed between the 17th and 18th centuries, such as those by Dutch publishers Janssonius or Pieter van der Aa. We do not ship to the United States.
