Italian school (XVIII-XIX) - Portrait of a young veiled woman

Italian school (XVIII-XIX) - Portrait of a young veiled woman. 61 x 39 cm (without frame) - 94 x 74 cm (with frame). Pastel on paper, with mount in a gilt wooden frame. The pastel shows a young woman at half length. She is caught in a thoughtful pose, her right hand raised to her temple and her elbow resting on a ledge. A transparent veil falls from her head over her dark hair and gathers on her shoulders. A light dress with a wide neckline leaves the décolleté uncovered. A bracelet of several strands of pearls and a drop earring complete the figure. The dark blue background, slightly lighter behind the figure, sets off the complexion. The artist renders it with soft blended passages of pink and white. The drapery is built with freer strokes, especially the striped veil and the gauze sleeve. The work belongs to the tradition of Italian pastel portraiture between the 18th and 19th centuries.
