Italian painter of the 19th century “Study of armorer and armature limb from the Renaissance” (from the core of three works/studies) Second half of the 19th century, approx. 1850–1880 Pictorial technique on a fibrous support applied to a wooden panel Dimensions: 47 x 31.6 cm in an era frame Description The composition, developed horizontally on a neutral umber-toned background, presents two distinct studies dedicated to European armor of Renaissance origin. On the left is depicted with notable descriptive attention a complete and articulated arm armor, arranged vertically and bent at elbow height. The different components of the protection are recognizable: the large upper shoulder plate, the articulated blades of the arm, the complex elbow protection and the lower part meant for the forearm. Rivets, joints and gilded profiles are highlighted through small light touches, almost to document not only the appearance of the object but also its mechanical functioning. Particularly effective is the rendering of metal surfaces, achieved through variations of gray, green-blue and white, with highlights suggesting the reflection of light on steel. The brown-gold profiles confer on the armor a richer and more decorative quality. On the right appears the profile of a armored man facing right, depicted half-length. The man wears a metal helmet with pronounced visor or peak and lateral cheek protections, while the torso is clad in a sturdy dark armor. The shoulder shows a barely perceptible circular motif and the arm displays additional articulated elements. The bearded face, left uncovered by the helmet, introduces a figurative element absent in the table dedicated exclusively to the armor. The figure does not seem conceived as an individual portrait, but rather as a typological study of the man-at-arms, intended to show the armor in its concrete arrangement on the body. Support and state of conservation Photos show that the painted surface does not necessarily appear to have been made directly on the wood: it seems more prudent, in the absence of material examination, to describe it as a painting technique on a fibrous support applied to a wooden panel. The support shows widespread aging, stains and surface alterations; in the lower left corner there is a clear gap in the surface coating, exposing the underlying layer. There are also abrasions, small marks and inconsistencies compatible with the age and nature of the object. The legibility of the two armors remains good anyway.
