Islamic Silver Silver Ring with Rectangular Dark-brown...

Islamic Silver Ring with Rectangular Dark-brown stone Decoration - 17th to 19th Century AD An Islamic silver ring built around a large rectangular bezel containing a flat-faced obsidian inset. The dark stone has an uneven surface appearance, with grey and brown patches and lighter deposits interrupting its near-black colouring. Traces of an engraved design remain visible, although wear prevents a reliable reading of the motif. The substantial setting is decorated with framed ornamental panels containing curling, foliate designs. Related decoration continues onto the broad shoulders, where scrolling forms are enclosed within defined borders. Projecting retaining tabs extend across the edges of the obsidian, securing it within the raised silver frame and contributing to the ring’s architectural appearance. The hoop narrows towards the back and shows an uneven outline, while the silver surface displays scratches, pitting, darkened recesses and wear to the raised decoration. The obsidian has pronounced abrasion, irregularities along its exposed edges and surface deposits. The broad dark centre contrasts with the intricate silver panels, allowing the construction and ornament of the setting to remain prominent despite the wear.
