Inkwell - Portadocumentos - Spelter

It is an inkstand from the 19th century in full Napoleonic III style, a piece that embodies that taste for exuberant ornamentation, contained theatricality, and the blend of practicality and decorative presence that defined the Second Empire. It is made of technical zinc, a material widely used in the second half of the 19th century for desk objects and decorative elements thanks to its malleability, its capacity to receive fine reliefs, and its sober metallic appearance which, once patinated, gains a discreet elegance. The design unfolds in a decorative tray with sinuous contours, with edges that ripple into scrolls and small vegetal motifs. On it rise the two inkwells with lids, worked with floral and geometric reliefs that recall the historicist metalwork of the period. The lids, slightly domed, crown each reservoir like small ornamental domes, providing visual rhythm and balance. At the rear stands a perforated backrest, a structure of metallic filigree that blends symmetry and fantasy: scrolls, stylized leaves, cartouches, and small arabesques that intertwine with the precise workmanship typical of Napoleon III. This element not only beautifies but also hierarchizes the piece, giving it an almost architectural presence on the desk. The ensemble conveys that hybrid character so typical of the style: practical functionality — to store ink, hold pens — and theatrical ornamentation, designed to dress the workspace with an air of distinction. The patina of the zinc, darkened in the crevices and brighter on the higher areas, accentuates the volumes and adds depth, reminding us that this is an object with history.
