Inge Morath - A Llama in Times Square

A llama in a New York taxi. An iconoclastic image of Inge Morath in 1957 near Times Square. The unexpected is around every corner in New York… A llama in Times Square was published in the December 2, 1957 issue of LIFE magazine. The feature highlights the animals of stage and television living in New York. Linda, the llama, is photographed on a return trip home after a television program at the ABC studios. Black-and-white prepress print on RC satin paper. Medium resolution, archive digital print. Later print, 2009. Format: 29.4 x 19.5 cm, with margins. Labels and annotations on the reverse. In very good condition. Presented on a 30 x 24 cm mat board. Inge Morath (1923–2002) was an important Austro-American photojournalist and photographer, renowned for being the first woman to be admitted as a full member of the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1953. Initially a translator and polyglot editor, she turned to the practice of photography in the early 1950s under the influence and mentorship of Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson. A tireless traveler, her work is characterized by deep humanist reportage, poetically rich street scenes, and intimate portraits of celebrities across Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and China.
