Described By: Mike ND Title: Important 1944 Mexican Presidential Presentation Gold Watch Maximino Avila Camacho To Dr. Horace G. Whittlesey With Leon Trotsky Association Description: Beautiful timepiece! Make it yours today. Happy bidding! IMPORTANT 1944 MEXICAN PRESIDENTIAL PRESENTATION GOLD WATCH Maximino ÃVILA CAMACHO TO DR. HORACE G. WHITTLESEY WITH REMARKABLE LEON TROTSKY ASSOCIATIONAn extraordinary, apparently unique, handcrafted gold wristwatch personally inscribed from Maximino Ãvila Camacho, President of Mexico (1940 1946), to his American friend, Dr. Horace G. Whittlesey, dated 1944.The spectacular rectangular case features hinged decorative panels depicting the Mexican national eagle and the Great Seal of the United States, executed in deeply sculpted relief with elaborate hand engraving, geometric borders, and floral ornamentation. The striking black dial features oversized gold Arabic numerals and a Swiss mechanical movement. The individually fashioned case tests approximately 16 to 17 karat gold by XRF analysis. The reverse bears the engraved dedication: Maximino Ãvila Camacho a su amigo el Dr. Horace G. Whittlesey 4-°-44” translating to Maximino Ãvila Camacho to his friend Dr. Horace G. Whittlesey, dated 1944.The provenance is particularly fascinating. According to family history, Whittlesey relocated to Mexico after answering an 1892 New York Times advertisement reportedly placed by President Porfirio DÃaz seeking an American dentist. He established a distinguished career in Mexico City, eventually serving on the faculty of the Mexican National University.Remarkably, Whittleseys March 7, 1961 obituary in The Emporia Gazette recounts his recollection that Leon Trotsky had been a patient in his dental office the day before Trotskys assassination in Mexico City in August 1940. This extraordinary anecdote provides a further connection to one of the twentieth centurys most consequential historical events.Presented during World War II, when Mexico and the United States were strengthening their alliance, the watchs dual national emblems and unusually personal presidential dedication suggest a meaningful relationship between the recipient and Mexicos highest office. An exceptional intersection of presidential history, Mexican-American relations, remarkable goldsmithing, and twentieth-century political history. No directly comparable example has been identified. According to family history, American dentist Horace G. Whittlesey relocated to Mexico in 1892 at the behest of President Porfirio Díaz, after answering a New York Times advertisement, and became the president’s personal dentist. Decades later, he received this watch from General Maximino Ávila Camacho, brother of then-president Maximino Ávila Camacho. A former governor of Puebla and cabinet minister, Maximino was a powerful and controversial political strongman, notorious for his volatile temperament. The personal dedication records his friendship with Whittlesey. Provenance: Dr. Horace G.
