Ian Fleming - Dr. No - 1958-1963

Technical and Historical Evaluation of the Copy This report outlines the bibliographic characteristics and historical value of this copy of "Dr. No" (Ian Fleming, Jonathan Cape, London), a highly collectible piece representative of the James Bond cultural phenomenon in the early 1960s. Chronological Significance of the Edition: The interior block of text corresponds to the publisher's sixth official printing, dated 1962. Its authenticity is certified by the facing list of works by the author on the jacket, which closes with the title "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1962). This edition is historically significant for being the exact edition Jonathan Cape distributed to bookstores to coincide with the booster commercial surge of the world premiere of the first 007 film in cinemas, starring Sean Connery. Preservation of the Genuine Pat Marriott Dust Jacket: The original paper dust jacket is a period-perfect frame for this 1962 edition. It features the distinctive spine with the author's name in white lettering and the external advertising rear cover with reviews of "Thunderball" (1961), as dictated by the publisher's standards for promoting the author's new releases. The front flap remains completely intact (unclipped), preserving the original publication price of "16s. net", a critical integrity element that is lost in the vast majority of surviving copies. Historical Patina and "Ex-Library" Provenance: The book comes with legitimate, documented institutional provenance, preserving on its endpapers the original ink stamp and the handwritten inventory number from the Rushden House British sanatorium library (Northamptonshire, England). This background gives the book a genuine vintage patina, serving as a real sociological testament to how Fleming's espionage novels were read and circulated in post-war British society. Structurally sound, free from modern restorations, and preserving a very complete jacket with clean original colors, this copy stands out as an excellent, highly presentable entry-level asset for any focused 007 literary collection.
