Coins & Banknotes / HONG KONG (SAR). Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 500 Dollars
HONG KONG (SAR). Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 500 Dollars, 31.3.1974. P-Unlisted. Artist's Rendition. PMG Encapsulated. The third of three exciting pairs of hand-painted, unadopted artists' renditions for the 1973 HSBC $500. The obverse, in purple-brown, features the Bank arms at left, Bank titles upper centre, and the characters 'Wu Bai' in the watermark at right. The reverse, in tan and brown, features the profile of one of the HSBC lions gazing out over the old HSBC building. This pair's design is the closest to that of the final issued note. As a working draft, it lacks the central security guilloche found on issued notes. Undoubtedly, a printer's model, either existing or now lost, would have displayed that guilloche with finer workmanship. Notably, the '31 March 1974' date never appeared on the Humpback Grouper $500s, which were issued only in 1973, 1975, and 1976. This piece suggests that artists' renditions sufficed for presentation to Bank officials; once the main elements were approved, a finer printer's model would have been commissioned to refine the smaller details. This lot is the last of three evolving designs. While each is a precious, unique item, acquiring and displaying all three together will place the fortunate buyer at the very pinnacle of Hong Kong pre-production materials.
