Two extremely rare books joined together. Both in French The First is: Histoire du siècle d'Alexandre, avec quelques réflexions sur ceux qui l'ont précédé. A Amsterdam, s.n., 1762., 1762. In-12°, XVI, 341 pp., Leather binding with gold titles, one plate is nearly detached. First edition and first book by Linguet a young Parisian solicitor, extremely erudite and wise. After an adventurous life he then wrote several books and left also many unpublished. HURTAUT, Pierre-Thomas-Nicolas,; 1719-1791. Geneva, 1750. First edition under this title. Not actually a translation from an English work as the title pretends, but a fairly direct copy of Louis de Gaya's Cérémonies nuptiales de toutes les nations (1680), to which is added the polygamistic tale of M. Harry. A very interesting global catalogue of marriage and courtship customs among Christians, Jews, Muslims and other religions. Hurtaut was also responsible for the 1751 title L'Art de Péter ('The Art of Farting'). 12mo (156 × 85 mm), pp. [8], xliv, [4], 168, [8]. Title ornament. A good copy. [Gay I, 742.]. Ouvrages Anonymes (I, 782) attributes the work to Hurtaut (1719-1791), noting that it is based on a work called Ceremonies Nuptiales de Toutes les Nations, Paris, 1680 by Louis de Gaya. However, the title-page notes that this is a translation from the English, of the second edition of Matrimonial Ceremonies Display'd: Wherein are exhibited, the various Customs. . . of near One Hundred different Kingdoms. . . to which is prefix'd, The comical Adventures of Sir Harry Fitzgerald, who had seven Wives. translated by Mrs. ***. (1748). For this French edition the OCLC locates five copies outside England, at the Burndy Library, Chicago, Michigan, Princeton, and Stanford. See also Gay (I), 742. Hurtaut (Pierre Thomas Nicolas)
