They are not diamonds; the name "diamond" stems from their clarity and well-formed faces. Since the first finds were in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also known as the Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond. Herkimer diamonds gained wide recognition after workers discovered them in large quantities while mining dolomite in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century. Geologists discovered exposed dolomite in the outcrops of Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the designation "Herkimer Diamond".
