His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first mentor and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely individual artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the workings of light and atmosphere occupy an important place. From the 1960s his painting evolved into an increasingly expressionistic and later also non-figurative direction, in which color, form, and painterly expression gained significance. Bies lived and worked in, among others, Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and acted as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong connection with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
