Helmut Newton - "POLAROIDS"

Original poster for the exhibition "POLAROIDS" at the Helmut Newton Foundation in 2025 Italian Vogue, Monte Carlo 2003, SX-70 Polaroid. Museum___Helmut Newton Foundation in 2025 Transgressive and sexual—these are the adjectives most often associated with the work of German photographer Helmut Newton, the creator of “porno chic” and the foremost exponent of voyeurism in photography. Where and when was Helmut Newton born? He was born seven months premature—as he himself recounts—on the morning of Sunday, October 31, 1920, in the Berlin neighborhood of Schöneberg. Helmut was his mother’s second child, born of her second marriage to a farmer from Silesia; both were Jewish. His father took over the management of his mother’s first husband’s business, a factory producing buckles and buttons, which provided for the family until the Nazis took control. Where did Helmut Newton begin his career as a photographer, and who did he work with? After attending the American School in Berlin, Newton began working as an apprentice for fashion photographer Yva until threats from the SS forced him into exile, first to Singapore and then to Australia, where he lived for seventeen years. There, he served for a time in the Australian Navy, worked for the Australian edition of Vogue, and met his future wife, June. In fact, “I once asked him if he thought he was a genius. He replied, ‘No, I think I’ve been given a twisted gift. I see the world differently’—to which he added—‘He told me that photography would always be his first love and I would be his second.’” What impact did the sexual revolution have on Newton’s career as a photographer? After his time overseas, Newton returned to Europe via London with a contract to work for the British edition of Vogue. However, that collaboration never quite took off, and he ended up living in Paris, where he made his living as a photographer. The outbreak of the sexual revolution in the 1960s and the paradigm shift in attitudes toward sex served as the catalyst for Newton’s great success as a photographer. In 1976, he published his controversial book *WhitWomen*, which chronicled the lives of the prostitutes on Rue Saint-Denis—a true milestone of the era. Though sometimes accused of being sexist, Manolo Blahnik comments on his work: “Newton’s feminine aesthetic was unique. He was a man who photographed women who truly looked like women.” Aesthetics: Helmut Newton’s Approach: Controversies aside, there is no doubt that his timeless images and naturalistic touch made him one of the first photographers to reinvent the woman of the 20th century. “I’ve always avoided studio photography. A woman doesn’t spend her life sitting or posing in front of a white spotlight,” he confessed. Newton died in 2004 when, while driving his Cadillac out of the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles, he suffered a heart attack that caused him to lose control of the car—probably for the first time in his life.
