全部拍賣 / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Hartmann Schedel / Wohlgemut / Pleydenwurff / Durer - The...

This original leaf is an incunabulum from 1493 extracted from the Liber Chronicle, printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger with the unmistakable textual and woodcut imprint stamped by the renowned workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The front of the page opens with the chronicle of the glorious reign of Charles IV of Luxembourg (Carolus quartus gloriosus imperator), king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor in the 14th century, recounting his travels in Italy between Pisa, Florence and Bologna, the solemn coronation in Rome by the papal legate of Urban V and the founding of the famous University of Prague, also recalling the rebellion that occurred in Nuremberg under his rule. Just below, dominated by a woodcut depicting the facade and cloister of a monastic community, the page deals with the birth and papal approval of new religious congregations, describing the Order of the Jesuits (Ordo jesuatorum fratrum), founded in Siena by Giovanni Colombini, and other canonical and monastic reforms that flourished in that era. The lower section of the front ends with the biography and the woodcut portrait of John II of France, called the Good (Joannes francorum rex), recounting his troubled reign during the Hundred Years' War, the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Poitiers at the hands of the English, and his imprisonment in London. Turning the page, the back hosts the chronological succession and the respective portraits of two important popes of the 14th century placed in the line of the popes. It begins with the biography of Pope Urban V (Urbanus quintus), who distinguished himself by his attempt to bring the papal seat back to Rome from Avignon, by his efforts at pacification in Italy through Cardinal Albornoz, and by his support for university studies. The page finally ends with the extensive account of the pontificate of Pope Gregory XI (Gregorius undecimus), the last French pope, famous for having decreed the definitive return of the papal curia to Rome in 1377, bringing an end to the Avignon captivity, though having to face gravest political tensions and the wars that broke out with the city of Florence and the Visconti of Milan.
