Hans Josef Weber-Tyrol (1874–1957)

Attributed to Hans Josef Weber-Tyrol (1874–1957) Autumn forest with stream Oil on panel, 59 × 84 cm. With a monumental gilded frame, 91.5 × 117 cm. Signed in red lower right “Weber Tyrol”, with “Weber” partially legible to the left of “Tyrol”. Undated. An autumnal forest landscape in which a stream flows toward the foreground between vegetated banks. On both sides trees surround the water, while in the middle a view opens to a blue‑gray sky with light clouds. The bent trunk on the right, the exposed roots and the alternation of shaded and illuminated bank areas give the composition its spatial coherence. The palette is dominated by browns, ochers, rust tones and muted greens. Blue accents in the foliage connect the vegetation with the sky and the reflections in the water. The painting technique ranges from broad, sweeping brushstrokes in the clouds and tree trunks to finer touches in leaves, grasses and roots. Short horizontal strokes suggest the water surface. The contrast between the dark foreground and the light opening in the distance sets the atmosphere of the landscape. Hans Josef Weber-Tyrol was born in Schwaz and received his first training in Innsbruck. From 1894 he worked in Munich, where his development became linked with the landscape painting of Munich and Dachau. From 1929 he lived in South Tyrol. His oeuvre includes landscapes, animal scenes, still lifes and figure pieces, executed in oil and watercolor. His landscapes fuse impressionist perception of nature with a pronounced interest in color and a lively brushwork. The attribution of this painting aligns with the spatial effect of groups of trees, the bent trunk forms and the varied brushwork in Weber-Tyrol’s landscapes. The red name inscription is involved in the stylistic and technical assessment. The central cartouche of the frame also bears “TYROL”. The painting was restored in 2026, cleaned and given a new final varnish. The frame was restored as well. Ultraviolet light examination and infrared reflectography revealed no retouchings or deviations. From a Dutch private art collection. In 2026 sold via Veilinghuis Nederland as German School.
