This work is a treatise devoted to the art of oratory in the French language. Du Vair lays out the principles of eloquence, the way to compose and deliver a speech, as well as the qualities necessary for the orator. He seeks to show that French can attain a genuine literary and rhetorical dignity, in the context of the formation of French prose at the beginning of the 17th century.
