全部拍賣 / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Greece - Thessaloniki (Salonika); AyN Ediciones - MENOLOGIO BIZANTINO DE OXFORD
Facsimile edition of the Oxford Byzantine Menologion (Ms.Gr.th. f.1) whose original is conserved in the Bodleian Library of Oxford. Limited edition of 995 copies for the world, co-edited by the Bodleian Library of Oxford and A.y N. Editions in 2006. The facsimile is a faithful and complete reproduction of the original. Bound in wood and cowhide. Dimensions: 13.5 x 10.5 x 3 cm and it consists of 112 pages. It contains a series of miniatures that depict the lives of the Saints. There is one miniature for each day of the year, starting from September 2 and ending on August 31. They are arranged on each page in groups of four. The book also contains 10 full pages with miniatures representing the life of Christ. The illuminated Menologion in the Bodleian Library of Oxford is a small yet superb jewel, unique among Byzantine manuscripts of its kind dating from the 14th century. Small in its reduced dimensions, but of extraordinary value due to the richness of its ornamental miniatures and its singularity, since this codex represents an exception within the wide Byzantine production of religious-themed books. Its originality lies in the fact that the entire work is comprised of images, more than a hundred miniatures with about four hundred individual scenes in its fifty-odd folios; in other words, the book is pure image—only brief captions verbalize the content of the scenes, and the beautiful poem that serves as a colophon and condenses the essential minimal information about the book: iconographic program, spiritual utility, ornamental richness, pattern, and owner. Far more than a mere devotional book, it is, in fact, a personal object of devotion and spiritual protection, very close to the tutelary function of a relic or a charm.
