Gloria Tamerre Petyarre (1945-2021) - Women collect the Bush Medicine leaves

Gloria Tamerre PETYARRE (c. 1945–2021) — Bush Medicine Leaves Iconic figure and strong-willed woman of the Central Desert, Gloria Petyarre marks Aboriginal art with her strength, generosity and works that are profoundly soothing. Niece of Emily Kame Kngwarreye and the first Indigenous artist to win the prestigious Wynne Prize (1999), she breathes into each of her canvases a rhythmic presence and a poetry that instantly awakens all the senses. The story of the theme: The Dream of the Medicinal Leaves (Bush Medicine Leaves) This painting illustrates an ancestral healing tradition transmitted among women of the Utopia community. In the Central Desert, women pick these scrub leaves with therapeutic properties to boil them in large vessels. Applied as repeated compresses on the chest or back, they relieve flu, headaches, back pain, stomach pain and chest pains. By boiling them longer to extract essential oils, the preparation is mixed with animal fat to form a salve applied to wounds and bruises. Through her fascinating brushstrokes — where one almost feels the wind swaying the herbs on a hot summer day — Gloria celebrates the land, traditional pharmacopoeia and the memory of Anmatyerre women's knowledge. A safe bet on the art market Present in the world's most prestigious collections (British Museum in London, National Gallery of Australia, Singapore Art Museum), Gloria Petyarre remains one of the most sought-after artists by international collectors. Artwork in very good condition, sold with its certificate of authenticity.
