First edition – Turin, Alessandro Fontana, 1831. Four bound volumes belonging to the America section of Giulio Ferrario’s extensive ethnographic and cultural-historical work from the early 19th century. The richly illustrated publication covers the history, culture, religion, social organization, clothing, architecture and lifestyle of the peoples of the American continents. The four volumes comprise: * Volume I: North America, Greenland, Canada and other northern regions. * Volume II: United States, Mexico, Guatemala as well as the cultures of Central America. * Volume III: South America, notably Peru, the Inca culture, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Patagonia. * Volume IV: Brazil, Guyana and the Caribbean including the Antilles. Illustrations The America section contains a total of 33 numbered plates, including numerous finely colored copper engravings as well as black-and-white illustrations. The illustrations depict, among other things: * Indigenous cultures of Mexico and Central America, Aztec pictorial manuscripts, deities, warriors and historical artifacts. * Religious ceremonies, traditional clothing and architecture of the Inca. * Historic views and structures of South America. * Dances, games and customs of the Chilean population. * A historical view of Buenos Aires. * Indigenous populations of South America. * Diamond mining in Brazil. * Items and daily life of the Caribbean. * Historical depictions of privateers in the Caribbean. Particularly appealing are the strongly colored plates, whose colorfulness and fine detail still make an impressive impact today. Condition Historic copies from 1831 in handsome, unrestored original condition. The bindings show age- and use-related wear. Some volumes have damaged spines or binding connections that partially come apart. The book pages show occasional foxing, browning, and other age-related signs of use. The numerous colored illustrations are mostly well preserved and often display appealing, vivid coloration. From the current review, all 33 plates appear to be present; a final single collation is still outstanding. The books were intentionally not restored so that their historical character remains intact. An interesting and extensive illustrated work on the history and culture of America from the early 19th century, especially for collectors of historical travel, country and ethnographic literature.
