Theoretical and experimental essay on galvanism, with a series of experiments conducted in the presence of the commissioners of the National Institute of France, and in various anatomical theaters of London. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Fournier fils, An XII – 1804. Original edition, complete in two volumes, preserved in the original bindings of the period, entirely in folio and partly still unopened. An important work in the early history of galvanism and electro-physiology, published by Giovanni Aldini, nephew of Luigi Galvani and one of the main protagonists in the dissemination and experimental development of galvanic discoveries in Europe. The octavo edition was published in 1804 concurrently with the quarto edition. The bibliographic description of the edition is: 2 volumes octavo, [6], XVI, 350 pp.; [4], XII, 330 pp., with 10 engraved plates folded out of text. The work documents a wide range of experiments on animal electricity and galvanism: muscular contractions, the nervous system, experiments on animals, electric fish, medical applications of galvanism, piles and electrical apparatus, as well as galvanic experiments conducted by Aldini on human subjects and cadavers. Wellcome Collection describes the work as consisting of two volumes with ten folded plates. Collation Volume I: [6], XVI, 350 pp. 7 engraved plates folded out of text (Pl. 1–7). Volume II: [4], XII, 330 pp. 3 engraved plates folded out of text (Pl. 8–10). Total: 10 plates, all present. A complete copy. The large plates are particularly spectacular and document the galvanic apparatuses and experiments: experiments on animals, anatomical preparations, applications on humans and on cadavers, piles and scientific instruments, electric fish and other experimental devices. Condition of preservation A copy of particular interest for being preserved in its original paper bindings, a condition far rarer than copies later rebound. The two volumes are entirely in blind tooling, with very wide margins; many leaves still preserve the unopened state. The original bindings show inevitable signs of time: wear, folds, tears and small marginal losses, especially on the spines and at the ends. The spines nevertheless retain the original labels/titulatures. The structure is delicate, as is normally the case for copies kept in their original binding from the period. The wear of the bindings is consistent with preserving the copy in its original state and does not significantly affect the body of the text. Internally the paper is generally very well preserved, sturdy and clean, with occasional light browning, stains or traces of time. The ten folded plates are all present and in good overall condition, with the usual editorial creases. No trimming: original margins intact. The preservation in the original bindings, the broad margins, the blind tooling and the presence of still unopened sheets constitute particularly desirable features for a copy of this work. Complete work. The photographs are an integral part of the description and show in detail the original bindings, the blind tooling and all 10 plates.
