Scientific name: Conus magus Linnaeus, 1758 Author: Described by the founder of modern taxonomy, the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné in 1758 (Conus magus Linnaeus, 1758). German name: Magician cone snail or wizard cone. Family: Conidae (cone snails). Origin: Philippines (Indo-Pacific region). Size comparison: At 61 mm (6.1 cm) the shell is a true giant! The species is extremely variable, but on average usually remains between 35 and 50 mm in size. Pieces over the magical 60 mm threshold are rare and highly sought after by collectors. Medical significance / Life form: This species is scientifically famous. From the potent venom of this fish-eating snail was developed the analgesic ziconotide (Prialt), which is several times more potent than morphine.
