DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK We are proposing at auction a vivid and engaging work by Giancarlo Montuschi, titled "The Waiting" and created in 2024 with mixed media on canvas. Our gallery has long represented the Maestro's work, which has been shown in numerous solo shows, group shows, thematic exhibitions, and reviews. The painting perfectly embodies the artist's poetics and unmistakable Neo-Pop aesthetic. Through fiery chromatisms, well-defined forms, and a narrative feel that nods to comic book and illustration language, Montuschi creates ironic, dreamlike, and surreal atmospheres. In this specific work, Giancarlo Montuschi fuses the aesthetics of Pop Art, Hopper-esque suspended atmospheres, and the imagery of 1950s B-movie science fiction. In the foreground, seated in a typical diner with a red sofa, an ashtray, and a quirky lamp whose base is a fish tank with a goldfish, lies the actress Vivian Blaine. The artist reworks a specific promotional photo from the 1940s, preserving the facial features and hairstyle, but transforming the original floral pattern of the dress into abstract marks resembling ideograms. In the starry night background, a large red flying saucer looms over a green structure with a single illuminated window. The strength of the work lies in the ironic and surreal short circuit between the ordinary and the extraordinary event. The detached, apathetic gaze of the protagonist, echoing the noir femme fatale attitude, drains drama from the ongoing alien invasion. This strong contrast creates a frozen cinematic frame, where the melancholy and isolation typical of the American dream absorb and normalize even the sci-fi nightmare. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES AND CRITICISM ABOUT THE ARTIST Giancarlo Montuschi, born in Faenza in 1952 and a native of Tuscany by adoption, is an artist whose prolific career blends the aesthetics of Pop Art, the imagery of comics (such as Flash Gordon), and the Faenza ceramic tradition. He is famous for his unmistakable blue figures and for the recent series "Astro-Pop", which combines 1930s-40s science-fiction influences with contemporary landscapes. His exhibition career began in 1972 in Faenza and includes prestigious milestones, such as participation in the Ceramics Triennials and Biennials (Zagreb, Vallauris, and Faenza) in the 1980s and a major retrospective in Sansepolcro in 1996. Internationally, after numerous shows in Europe, he exhibited at the David Leonardis Gallery in Chicago in 2014, but the most significant institutional milestone is participation in the 51st Venice Biennale (2005) in the IILA pavilion. Among the most significant recent exhibitions are the group show "Diabolik" at the Mole Antonelliana in Turin (2021), the exhibition of monumental works with the historic Galleria Piero Della Francesca (2022), and the important solo show "YTI⅃AƎЯ" at MUVI in Viadana in 2023. In recent years, in addition to continuing his collaboration with large formats with Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca of Arezzo, he has appeared with other galleries with whom he collaborates at some of the most well-known Italian sector fairs. SHIPPING AND PACKING Packing: We guarantee professional, rigid, reinforced custom packaging designed to preserve the work's entire integrity during transit, protecting it from shocks, folds, and moisture. Courier: Tracked, fast, and secure shipping via express courier. Shipping Notes: Shipping costs, which may seem slightly higher than average, reflect the special attention we give to packaging and to choosing reliable couriers. The timelines indicated on the platform are estimates. We generally ship within the indicated terms, sometimes even earlier. However, it is possible that, during periods of high traffic or if issues arise (for example, strikes), shipments may slip by a few days. In such cases, we typically keep the buyer constantly informed about the order status and have the package ready to ship on the first business day. If the order falls on a Friday, we postpone the shipment to Monday to avoid risky storage at warehouses over the weekend. Customs and Export (Non-EU): For buyers residing outside the European Union, shipping may require the technical time needed to obtain the Export License from MiC (Ministry of Culture). Any customs duties are the buyer's responsibility. Invoicing: Professional seller. The work will be accompanied by a fiscal receipt (or electronic invoice, available upon request by sending your details at the time of lot award). Frames and glass: The frame, if present, is included in the sale but should be considered a gift, so no complaints about its condition will be accepted. The conditions are always stated exhaustively in the description. If glass is present, it will be included in the sale only if the lot is picked up personally by the purchaser at our gallery. If shipping, the glass is always removed and therefore never considered included in the sale.
