全部拍賣 / Sports & Leisure / Germania-Latterne - Bicycle light - 1910

This is a special object: an antique carbide headlamp, probably for a bicycle or motorcycle, from the early 20th century. Here is some more information: What is it and how does it work? Light source: Instead of a glow lamp or LED, this lamp runs on carbide gas (acetylene gas). Operation: In the lower chamber of the lamp there is carbide (calcium carbide). In the upper chamber there is water. By turning the small valve/lever on top, the water drips slowly onto the carbide. This causes a reaction in which flammable acetylene gas is released. Ignition: This gas flows to the burner (behind the glass) and must be manually lit there. The mirror behind the flame provides a bright, focused beam. History These lamps were very popular in the early years of bicycles and early cars, roughly between 1890 and the 1930s, before electric lighting became reliable and widespread. They produced far brighter light than candles or oil lamps. The mark is from Herm. Riemann's Germania-Laterne, produced by the renowned German manufacturer Hermann Riemann from Chemnitz-Gablentz. Details of the stamp Brand name: Germania-Laterne (refers to a popular model of carbide lamps that Riemann produced around 1900–1920). Manufacturer: Herm. Riemann's with the recognizable oak leaves and acorns logo in the center. Patent indication: D.R.G.M. (Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster), indicating the design was officially registered and protected in Germany before World War I. Riemann was one of the premier quality producers of bicycle and motorcycle lighting in Europe. Application: This specific model with the spring clamp/side mounting was intended for the handlebar stem of an antique men’s or women’s bicycle.
