George Shaw (1751–1813) - Set of 4: Ornithological...

A fine set of four antique copperplate engravings depicting birds of prey and passerines—the Rosy Starling, Crested African Falcon, Long-Legged Falcon, and Ural Owl—originally published in London in 1808 for Dr. George Shaw’s landmark work 'General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History'. Rendered with remarkable scientific precision and delicate Georgian burin technique, each study captures its subject in an authentic profile posture, showing meticulous attention to plumage texture, anatomical morphology, and expressive facial detail against subtle natural ground lines. George Shaw (1751–1813) was an English botanist, zoologist, and medical doctor who served as Keeper of the Natural History Collections at the British Museum and was a co-founder of the Linnean Society of London. Shaw was a central figure in cataloging and introducing exotic global fauna to Enlightenment Britain, producing monumental multi-volume zoological works that set the standard for early 19th-century systematic natural history.
